Luka grew up in Woods Hole, Massachusetts where currents regularly exceed 5 knots. As a kid he would try to time his fishing with the local tide gauge, but often showed up only to find the water ripping in the wrong direction. After completing his PhD in Oceanography through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology & Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program, he built Actual Currents, the tool he wished he'd had as a kid.
